As artists, we're always looking for inspiration.
Sometimes it arrives in the form of a beautiful piece of artwork. Sometimes it's a conversation with a friend. Sometimes it's a walk on the beach, a stack of vintage magazines, or a scrap of paper that catches our eye.
And sometimes it arrives in the pages of a book.
In a recent video, Unboxing Inspiration, I shared a new addition to my creative library and reflected on something I've noticed over and over again throughout my artistic journey: inspiration rarely stays in one place.
A book doesn't simply become a book.
A single idea becomes a journal entry.
A journal entry becomes a conversation.
A conversation becomes an experiment.
An experiment becomes a new piece of artwork.
That's one of the things I love most about creative practice. Inspiration isn't a destination. It's a starting point.
When I discover an idea that resonates, I'm less interested in copying it and more interested in following where it leads. What questions does it raise? What assumptions does it challenge? What possibilities does it open up?
Those questions often become the foundation for new creative explorations, both in my own work and within the Collage-Lab community.
One theme that continues to surface is the importance of play. Many artists begin their creative lives with curiosity and experimentation, only to find themselves later weighed down by expectations, perfectionism, and self-judgment. Revisiting a mindset of exploration can be a powerful way to reconnect with the joy of making.
Another recurring idea is the role labels play in our creative lives. What happens when we stop worrying about whether something qualifies as "art" and simply focus on the act of creating? How might our work change if we gave ourselves permission to experiment without attaching expectations to the outcome?
These are the kinds of questions that keep creativity alive.
The books, artists, experiences, and conversations that inspire us are valuable not because they provide answers, but because they help us ask better questions.
So the next time you encounter a book, artwork, podcast, or creative idea that sparks your imagination, pay attention. Follow the thread. See where it leads.
You never know what creative adventure might begin with a single spark of inspiration.
