This week’s Lab Notes are a mix of creative fuel, community celebration, and one cow fact I had to share.
- Crowdsourcing Experiments
I’ve been leaning into the hive mind lately and testing what happens when we let the community shape the experiments. Spoiler: the results are way more fun than when I try to plan everything myself. Inside the membership, I let members choose the experiments I did in our latest Zoom. From layered gel prints to translucent papers, from hot glue stamps to a dimensional inspiration – we had such a good time!
- CURATED Bundle opens Monday
Mark your calendars! The first ever CURATED bundle – a goodie bag full of free creative tools & resources - opens this Monday. You’ll want in on this.
- Grid Journal Jam Replay
Missed the live Play Date session? Don’t worry, the replay is up and ready. Get your scissors, glue, and journal out for some gridded goodness. I had so much fun on the live, that I created another grid journal page that same day!
- Cows Don’t Like Cantaloupe
Random fact from my week: While our cows love the sweetness of a watermelon rind, we learned that cantaloupe is not the same. The look of disappointment on Thelma’s face when she thought she was getting watermelon…priceless. A reminder that boundaries are natural, even for cows.
- The Big Pink Donut is Coming Back
Yes, it’s true. I’m telling you here to hold myself accountable. Last spring, I had an idea for a large pink donut, but some poor planning on my part meant that I didn’t make the deadline for the fundraising event that inspired it. Now, I return to the idea, with some lessons learned, and hopefully I’ll be sharing this large sprinkle-covered mixed media confection with you soon.
- Grids 2.0
“G” is for Grids was my very first online class, back in early 2020. But it needs a makeover – as the first thing I ever recorded, I shudder when I watch it now and listen to the horrendous sound, etc. BUT, the lessons from that first course are still really fun, and a great intro or reintroduction to collage. I did all of the projects with a group of art educators last year and they loved it. So, I’m rerecording “G” is for Grids. It will still be free, but there’s a catch… the only way to get Grids 2.0 is by signing up for the CURATED bundle, which opens Monday! Watch this space.
- Find Your Tribe
Creative work is always better when you’re not doing it alone. Whether it’s here in Collage-Lab or somewhere else, make sure you’re building your circle of art people.
- New Gel Printing Podcast
There’s a new podcast all about gel printing, and I’m already hooked. Perfect listening while you collage, paint, or clean up the paper scraps on your floor (no judgment).
- Crowdsource Ideas for Upcoming YouTube Videos
What do YOU want to see on the channel? I’m opening the floor to requests, demos, and deep dives. Hit reply and tell me your dream video.
- Labor Day Vibes
It may be the end of summer, but definitely not the end of the heat (hello, 97° and heat index of 111°). Wherever you are, I hope you’re squeezing in some long weekend creativity.
That’s the week in Lab Notes. Which one of these 10 things sparked your curiosity the most?
